Want to know my secret to the perfect smokey eye?
NYX Jumbo Eye Pencils is definitely one of them! These fat little pencils are a god send from the makeup geniuses that run NYX cosmetics.
I don’t know if you have tried their products yet, extremely affordable, extremely pigmented and workable, great on camera. I have quite a few NYX cosmetics running rampant through my makeup kit and work. I use everything from their shadows, to their lipsticks, to their lip liners and contour creams.
But today it is all about their Jumbo Eye Pencils!
The first time I heard about this product was actually through a you tube makeup tutorial (I can’t for the life of me remember which one) where the girl used the color milk as a base for her purple eyeshadow. The second time was in makeup school where my friend and fellow artist Samantha Caporusso was using black bean as the base for her models evening smokey eye.
BAM! Lightbulb! I immediately went out and bought a handful of these pencils. They are extremely pigmented, and emollient. They will help your eyeshadow out, and really bring on the pigment. They are also great for face painting, and dramatic complicated makeups. Just draw it on and set with a similar colored eyeshadow! I use them for highlighting the face as well.
Some people have reported creasing with this product. The pencils as I mentioned above are extremely emollient, so if applied incorrectly this could be a problem.
However for example with a smokey eye, I start at the lash line and apply a swipe of black bean, I then take a mini smudger brush and blend the product upwards in the general shape I want my smokey eye, until there is just a thin smokey layer of product. Not only does this prevent creasing and increase longevity, it gives me a good guide for applying the shadow, and increases the sultry smokiness.
The only con for this product I can think of, is due to their size I have not found any sharpener except for the one sold by NYX that will work! Other brands jumbo pencil sharpeners just aren’t big enough, so keep that in mind when you are buying!
However, these pencils are only $4.50 a pop on the NYX website so I can afford to buy one more sharpener.
This product gets a 9/10 for me!
Below I have included two swatches from a couple of my favorite pencils, #601 black bean and #618 purple. With and without flash. Maybe I will do a look using one or both in the near future.
