Look of the day: Red & White

Today, I was supposed to have a shoot with some friends, just for fun and for our portfolios!

However last-minute things fell through so I stayed home, and played with some makeup. When I first started doing makeup I bought a 120 palette thinking it was the greatest thing alive, I quickly found that it fell short when it compared to professional brands but I still have it for personal use.

One of the  things I find severely annoying about my 120 palette is the fact that the shadows are so soft the dang things keep breaking.  I wont touch it for 6 months and somehow 3 of the shadows will be shattered.  I think they have tiny time bombs in them.

You can really tell the shadows are sub par just by looking at them, Maybe I will redo this look with my sugar pill burning heart palette when I get it just so you all can see the comparison!

Anyway here is just a quick eye look I did, while looking for something to do.

I only used the 120 palette, + a black ben nye cream + a lip tar in feathered for a white base.

Quick and easy!

p.s.  excuse the brows I really need to go get them done 😉

What do YOU want reviewed?!

So my birthday is coming up soon, which spurred me to blog again.  I am surprised so many people still read this thing considering I am so sporadic in posting.  I will post 4 times a week for a month then not post for 2.  I just get so busy sometimes 😦 Sorry fanwiches.

ANYWAY!

So for my birthday every year.. so far at least, this is only the second year… my boyfriend buys me a large amount of makeup products from the ever wonderful Camera Ready Cosmetics .

If you don’t shop there all ready what is wrong with you? I actually have no idea what I would do without this website.  They have pretty much everything I need for my kit, including special fx stuff, + they have pro discount + the shipping is cheap + they ship faster than any other company ever!

I always get my stuff within a week, while other companies take 2 or 3 sometimes 😦

This year, I spent an extra long time perfecting my birthday list, to maximize my goodies. I am going to post a list and I want you to tell me what to review, and I will do swatches and a review and everything.

I may even do a big video haul, so my readers can see what I look like.  I am a bit camera-shy.  If you are really curious to see my awkward bumbling self go to my website  www.cvmmakeup.tk  and go to press and watch the video of me at IMATS.  The camera guy had to actually chase me down because I was so loathe to give an interview.

I sure am off topic today

HERE IS THE LIST!

– Sugarpill 4-Color Palette / Burning Heart

– La Femme Blush Palette 12 Color

– Embryolisse 23000 Lait-Crème Concentrè (24-Hour Miracle Cream)

“MILK” editorial in SugarKiss Magazine

Not long ago I did a shoot with photographer Kim Akrigg , who I have worked with a few times before. She recently relocated to Toronto, and it was great getting to do one final shoot before she moved.

Here are the end results of our collaboration, the model is Darian from Key Model Management, and it was published in SugarKiss Magazine.

Ben Nye HD Media Pro Foundation

I have yet to do a foundation review, however next to brushes my great love is foundations.  Every time I go anywhere there is makeup I ignore all the bright colored eyeshadows and lipsticks, and sit down with as many brushes as I can find and test as many different foundations as I possibly can.

I have dry skin, albeit very clear  skin.  However, foundations are still tricky for me, I have always found it hard to find a good matte foundation that doesn’t show off the dry crackly skin on the bridge of my nose and in the center of my forehead.  I spend all day checking in any reflective surface I can find to make sure my foundation hasn’t settled into my crackly bits, thus destroying the most important part of my makeup, the base. It is especially hard to find a cream foundation for any sort of dry skin.

Now down to business.  So many companies are jumping into the HD game!  Everyone is just slapping the word HD on all their products and people are buying them up like Hot Cakes.  Of course when it comes down to it anything can work for HD when applied correctly.  But it helps when the product applies like the Ben Nye HD Media Pro Foundation does.

This foundation has a light to medium coverage.  It’s not going to hide every imperfection you have, use concealer for that.  It will however apply like silk , even out your skintone and make you look like your skin is naturally that even and glowy.  For people with reasonably good skin like me, this foundation is a god send.  You really only need a tiny bit, I like to apply this with my fingers.  It covers any redness I might have and really doesn’t look like I am wearing anything at all.

Most importantly it doesn’t show my dry skin.

The container is the typical Ben Nye cream foundation packaging. The 5oz clear screw top jar with the silver ring around the edge, the ben nye label stamped in the center of the lid, and the info on the back.

This foundation will probably last months with the little amount you have to use.  The finish is a silky demi matte, more matte then say graftobians foundation palette  and a little less matte then the kryolan ultra foundations.

You do need to lightly powder.

I highly Recommend you go out and give this a try I can see this becoming a staple in my personal as well as professional kit.

Picture time!

IMATS post #1

As many of you may know I was involved in the Vancouver 2011 Imats last weekend.  I only went on the first day the saturday, and most of my day was spent being a contestant in the beauty/fantasy student competition.

I am planning on doing a big post about it tomorrow or the next day with product reviews/ a haul post detailing the stuff I got in my goody bag (EVE PEARL PALETTES ) and what I bought after It was all over.

As well as my side of the student competition and how it went down / how nervous I was/ What the other contestants were like.

I will however leave you with a quick video that my school did of their and my Imats Experience.

After 1:07, It is all me and the student competition.  Excuse the constant giggling I am camera shy.

Throw out your sponges Merle Norman!

Though I am a makeup artist, I often neglect my eyebrows.  I don’t like to pluck them myself, and I just am so busy sometimes I don’t get them done for a couple months.  Luckily I have been blessed with some pretty nice brows, good arches all that jazz.

When I do get them done, I like to get them waxed.  I used to get them threaded, which in my opinion actually delivers the very best results, however I totally can not handle the pain. SO, I like to get them waxed, and when I get them waxed I don’t mind spending a little extra money to hopefully get the very best.

I mean I know I can get my eyebrows done for 4 dollars, but on Friday I opted instead to pay 17$ at Merle Norman for what I hoped would be a quick, but satisfying experience.

It all started out fine, the girl who helped me was nice enough, told me about her school experience, we small talked, she worked away, trimming, plucking, waxing. She was a bit of a perfectionist and studied my brows intently after she finished making sure they were perfect, and to her credit they look pretty damn good.

Unfortunately, she had to offer to cover my red forehead up with a little foundation. Unfortunately, I had to agree thinking all the while “how nice, how nice, how nice.”  Unfortunately, the sponge she started to apply the foundation with looked like it had been dipped in a vat of foundation, and it was obvious by the foundation almost dripping of it, that it had been used on at least 20 faces other then mine.

My sponges don’t look like that after using it on set touching up a model for 12 hours, let alone my personal sponges which I sometimes use for a whole week straight on myself.

Needless to say I was disgusted! I stopped her half way through, paid, left and went and bought facial wipes at the grocery store across the way and vigorously scrubbed my brows worried about all sorts of skin diseases, remembering all the horror stories I had heard before.

Luckily, my forehead isn’t rotting off. But, Merle Norman did lose a customer. I will never go back there again.  Maybe being a makeup artist has made me a bit of a germaphobe. I do hand sanitize every 5 minutes when working on models, I do religiously spray all my makeup with 70% and 90% alcohol. I do clean my brushes before every shoot, and in between every model. I do make sure to clean out my kit every 6 months and throw out everything that needs to be. Frankly I think that is pretty standard, and if you don’t do those things you are abusing your right to apply makeup.

I don’t think its too much to ask, so I am just going to say it

THROW OUT YOUR SPONGES MERLE NORMAN!
